Spain has come top of the tables for clean and safe beaches in 2008, according to the Foundation for Environmental Education, who hand out the Blue Flags. The Spanish got 499 Blue Flags and a further 77 for their Marinas.
iBiza got 18 which is a great achievement considering it's size. The Balearics as a whole got 61.
They awarded over 3000 flag to thirty six countries across the world including South Africa, New Zealand and the Caribbean. I'd hate to be a judge on that panel. The flag is a symbol of quality.
Beaches are awarded the flag through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and other services.
